Suggest anyone going gets a current issue of the English magazine 'Patchwork & Quilting' and plot their shopping route with a map and the ads in the magazine.  There are many stores listed - the website in the front of the book you get a full page of all the shops and quilt festivals etc, for the British Isles.

Ascot is the place to go - there's a national Quilt exhibition in the Exhibition Halls at Ascot Racecourse in July, and you have never seen so many quilt shops, or quilters, or heard so many people talking and laughing, as at Ascot!

VISIT the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to see their textiles collection.

I actually went to the Quilt Room last Wednesday managed to pick up a few things - including some American magazines which are virtually non existent in all the newsagent in England. The two UK ones are on sale 'Patchwork and Quilting' and 'Popular Patchwork' but not the normal US ones. For these you need to go to a quilt shop. I also bought a pair of gloves for Machine Quilting and these are cream with rubber spots on them to hold the material.. I also picked up quite a few cheap but good books.

LIMERICK QUILT CENTRE

PHONE; 061-419790

A shop in Limerick that even the locals had never heard of it. When we eventually got there, the only way we knew it was a patchwork place was the red and white school house block painted on a board at the front of what looked like a house, with an arrow pointing to a garage. We had to open double doors and squeeze past cartons of stock to get into the shop itself where a studio type class was in progress.  We had phoned that morning to see if shop was open and were told to come in, so we did. extremely difficult to find, even with street directory and exact address.
Suggest you call ahead and check as owner seems to run the shop in an unusual manner!

To find it, there is a map on their web site.

There's usually someone in there who speaks English. They sell Provence fabric and toiles as well as American fabric. The US fabric is sometimes more expensive than OZ so convert before you buy unless you absolutely have to have it! Prices on French fabrics are ok and the fabric is quite wide. The area around the shop is lovely, very picturesque. There's a teddy bear and porcelain doll shop in the same street. Metro: Maubert-Mutualite

ST. PIERRE MARKET

But if you really want to see French fabric, not special for quilting, go to St Pierre Market, in Montmartre, subway station is 'Blanche' on lane n° 6. Out of the subway, just go to the Sacré Coeur (white church in Montmartre) and you'll see the Market, it's only fabrics, fabrics, on our levels, the hugest one in Paris, and really fun to visit. BUT, vendors won't speak english there, I'm afraid.

Saint Remy de Provence is not far from Avignon and is well worth visiting.
The shop stocks heaps of Provencal fabric and in June 2000, was 55 francs (about A$14.00) a metre (150 cm wide). Mme Janic Mouchet speaks English. The shop also sells table linen (all cotton). I heartily recommend both the shop and the town!!

ITALY

If you go to Quilt Italia website they have a list of shops not all have  a website: http://www.quiltitalia.it/negozi.asp
Tuscany has excellent linen fabrics, very heavy with patterns woven into the fabric, some are natural, some coloured.... but all of them are too heavy for making quilts.... There are many shops that sell these fabrics. One in almost every little town in Tuscany. The nicest ones are in Siena and Montalcino. I was a bit disappointed that my mum bought lots of linen fabric for tablecloths and I could not find anything suitable for patchwork.... until I came to the town of Arezzo!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

AREZZO

There are two lovely places there, in a little side street there is a shop called:

LA FAVOLA MIA

(via Cavour 65)
which is full of lovely things- country style. 8 bolts of patchwork fabric from the US in cute patterns and lots of ceramic things- I found a china thimble with a tiny picture of a sheep and a little village.... And a lovely quilt panel for a cot quilt too.... they wrap presents beautifully- the package was almost too nice to open!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

BUSSATI

And then- the dream shop. In the big shopping street of Arezzo, Corsa Italia,
..... looks really good with a stone arc entrance and inside bolts and bolts of fabric!
At first I was a bit disappointed- again it looked like there was only linen there.... but then- cotton prints! Italian fabric made in Milano.... and the prints were so nice! I could have bought them all but limited myself to three- the first has Italian mountain flowers, like old pharmacy drawings, the second has renaissance architecture and the last one looks a bit like William Morris fabrics, ornamental and so nice.... I did not even look at price or width of fabric... Just got one meter of each.... NIce surprise, they were Lit. 25000 (around $25/m) but the big surprise came when I opened them out at home- they were not the usual 1.15m wide fabrics but 2.80m! I could not believe it!!! :-)

Was 2 shops and one specialised in theme fabrics endemic to the area - florals (forget-me-nots, the state flower), fauna and vegetation, totem poles and Russian Zhostovo inspired fabrics. I had a lovely time in these two shops, doing a bit of damage to the credit card. The shops were both great with fabrics, stacks of patterns and little nick-nacks.

1)This is Disneyland for Fabricaholics. Sooooo Cheap! Leave the kids at the real thing down the road.
2) I should have made this my first stop as the place was huge. They had every kind of fabric in it, but mainly cottons. The prices on the cottons ranged from $1.98 (Debbie Mumm) to $7.89 per yard for the cottons. They had an extensive range of flannel fabric as well for $2.49 a yard. Needless to say I am home now and broke, but had lots of fun.

The size of this store took my breath away when I first went in.  Yes it has patterns and non-quilting fabric, but it also has a huge cottons section perfect for quilters.  Inexpensive, and well worth the trip to Gastonia. Lots of parking, too.

What a great shop. I bought fabric and books here. Lots of fabrics, books, and they do classes, and have a heap of quilts on display, both tops and finished ones. The two staff on when I visited were chatty and friendly. I'd also make this shop one worth visiting. It is in the downtown area, so there are other shops to browse at as well.

This is a small shop that had a variety of items, fabric, sewing machines, sewing items, books, knitting wool etc. The gentleman here also repairs sewing machines. I did not buy fabric here. If one were driving right past this shop I'd stop just for a quick look if you could duck into a parking spot for a few minutes, but would not make a detour to see it.

You can book a tour of THAT PATCHWORK PLACE /MARTINGALE, if you are there on the right days (at least, people in the States can, so if you have a contact to do it for you...). You get shown through the offices where many of the quilts from books are displayed on the walls. All interesting, but the best bit of course is the 'Hurt Books' room, where you can buy perfectly pristine copies of books returned by booksellers etc at prices up to 75% off retail. The choice is whatever is there on the day ... An M-bag to get it all home is a good, cheap postage investment if you are prepared to wait (its surface mail).

Contact them through their website: http://www.shopmartingale.com/visit-our-offices.html

    1) They sell books, notions and quilting supplies.
This would be the easiest shop to find if you are a tourist without a car. Or even if you have a car, you can get there on foot. Head towards the Pike Street market.
2)the latter slapbang in the middle of the city, near the produce market which is also worth a look). They have lots of quilts on hangers, many of which are antique, and lovely T-shirts).

I wandered into one of the rooms and there was a display set up featuring Australian P & Q mags and when I looked closer.... Michelle & Ami's fabrics and Patchwork Angel patterns! When the owner realised I was Australian and that I actually KNEW Michelle, Ami & Lynette Anderson, there was even more excitement. Other people in the shop were "Ooohing and Aaahing"over the Aussie goodies as well. As an Australian, it was a very proud moment.

Good supply of fabric and notions, some books and patterns. To find this shop use the map in the UAE business guide, then stop and ask once you get close as the map isnt quite right, which is pretty normal for this part of the world. The shop has details of the local guild and is run by the American wife a UAE National. A fabric oasis in this patchwork dessert :)
The directions for people living here might be made easier by saying It is a block and a half behind the gold Centre going toward Airport Rd and there is a Restaurant called the Hot Plate directly opposite the shop I called the shop and the directions that were given were a bit disjointed and asking people was hopeless.

    JAPAN

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TSHUSHIN: (the Japanese quilting mag) carries ads for many many Japanese quilting shops and mail order supplies . It is written in Japanese but a hotel reception etc would be able to translate. The mag is carried in the better book shops and quilt stores.

Many of the Japanese department stores have small amounts of quilting fabrics. It's worth checking the store directories if you're passing by.
Problem with finding your way around in Japan is that the streets don't have names!
Have the name written out and don't be afraid to ask for directions or phone shop for directions. In a lot of cases there is someone who speaks a bit of English.
I found Mimu on the web, I wrote to the person who wrote the English version and she sent me some shops.
*Every* tourist shop has fabric - designer fine handkerchiefs, tenugui (loosely woven Jap design fabric used as headbands or handcloths) or furoshiki - large fabric squares like scarves, used for wrapping objects. All reasonably priced.
For brilliant helpful information in English, for anyone touring Japan,
and just look up the city of your choice for very detailed info. This other site www.japan-guide.com
has heaps of info as well, and the forums are terrific. You can ask - how can I get from Takayama to Shirakawago by bus, and either other travelers, or official Japanese tourism people will answer you.

The following shops can be reached by train from Shinjuku. JR Chuo line. Hop off at Kichijoji sation.

This is the shop featured in a book produced by That Patchwork Place. An American style shop, with some Japanese fabrics.
The best quilting shop is Quilt House Yama ...... totally dedicated to the quilter. Most stuff comes from the US, prices are OK for Japan and also some japanese cottons......
has moved to across the other side of the railway line.(Under the trainline and turn right. It's set below street level)). I grabbed a new business card, but guess what? It's all in Japanese!
Not far away from here is Cotton Field. We asked at Quilt House Yama and were given a map with directions marked on by assistant.

Liked this shop, but they wouldn't let us take photos. Had lots of old American Quilts hanging around. Fabric predominately American again, but lots of Japanese too. Nic-nacs made shopping interesting here.

    TOKYO HAND

Tokyo Hand is the most amazing place for anyone interested in any handwork. Just the biggest dept. stores devoted to handcrafts. 8 floors at the Shibuya store. Just visiting the Shibuya station is mind-blowing. They estimate that over 2 million people go through here daily!!!
Places like Tokyo Hands and Yusawaya are not really quilting shops. They are chain stores..... Tokyo Hands is a DIY and crafts of all kinds so while it carries a small amount of fabric and quilting supplies it is very limited.
Yusawaya is a fabric shop and crafts..... more fabric than TH but mainly aimed at the dressmaker, so there is a very wide selection of fabrics of all types. Not just cottons..... and Seibu also has P/W sections.

    KYOTO

There are two fantastic upmarket TENUGUI shops along Shijo-dori in Kyoto,
one of the main shopping streets. The street corner is called Kawaramachi.
Walk one block left, and one block right (over the bridge) and you'll find
lots of interesting shops, besides tenugui shops. You will also find many
designs (and qualities) of tenugui all over the place, including tourist
shops. Cheap tenugui are loose-weave, but good quality ones are similar to
    quilt fabric.
You might also want to look at furoshiki - squares of fabric in cotton,
chirimen or silk - used to wrap and carry things. The cotton ones are great
    for quilting.

     FUMIMARO

Kimono shop on Philosopher's walk, Kyoto
There is a lovely little vintage kimono shop with a friendly lady along the
famous Philosopher's walk in Kyoto. it is on the right as you walk down the path from Ginkakuji, on the lower part of the walk. You can have quite detailed conversations, even without speakin each other's language.

    KYOTO MUSEUM OF TRADITIONAL CRAFTS

    FUREAIKAN

This is in the lower ground floor of a large museum near the Heian Shrine
(fantastic shrine, amazing hidden garden at the back). Don't confuse this
with the Kyoto Handicraft Centre - this is much nicer. Find out the times
for free(!) performances by maiko (Kyoto apprentice geisha), and be seated
early. The centre houses a lovely display of many of Japan's traditional
arts, and the exhibition never seems to busy. There are usually a couple of
traditional artist there demonstrating their stonemasonry or weaving. The
helpful staff have an English audio guide that you can borrow. They also run
handcraft courses at reasonable rates such as dyeing hankies, or painting
fans. Their shop is also quiet, and they have a great range of traditional
Kyoto items to purchase. I added to my handkerchief collection there.

    ROKETSUZOME

    Traditional batik dyeing

I had a wonderful experience in Kyoto, doing a traditional batik dyeing
workshop. You can book on the internet, and give them as little as 1 hour's
notice! It's a mother and son operation, who have a workshop set up in a
residential area. Take a taxi - not expensive, and otherwise it's tricky to
get to. They were so helpful and friendly (not that we spoke the same
language at all!). I traced my design on the light box, and was very
confused when grandma kept saying 'right off!', pointing to my elbow. It
turned out she wanted me to turn the light off J

    FUJIGOKO

    KUBOTO MUSEUM

Search the SCQuilters yahoogroups archive, and Google images for Itchiku
Kubota. Another SCQuilter wrote about visiting his museum of high-art kimono
near Fujigoko - a region of five lakes not too far from Tokyo.

     EATING!

Don't forget to visit Japanese bakeries. There are always some near stations
    - they have wonderful French pastries at cheap prices, and amazing Japanese
variations that will make you whip out your camera.
Always investigate the lower ground floor of department stores, especially
if you want to buy some dinner. They are amazing places, and most food is
marked down from about 6 pm. That's where you will find astonishing
European-style cakes, as well as traditional pickles, fish, sushi and lots
    of fried things.

    FESTIVALS/MATSURI

Make sure you Google 'festivals in Japan' or 'matsuri'. Now that Google
translates Japanese pages, you can find all kinds of local festivals, not
just the big ones. The festivals are simply amazing. I build my whole
itinerary around the festivals. I went to an iris one near Narita airport, a
lily one in Nara, a cleansing one at several places (quite a lot of shrines
had that festival at that time). There is always a festival on, no matter
where you are, and they are the highlight of any Japan trip.

And for all of you SCQuilters who think they will go to Japan 'one day':
just do it! Japan is NOT an expensive country to visit, especially compared
to Europe. Japanese tourism needs your dollars to help them recover. And you
will have the most brilliant time!

Keep in mind that many shops in Singapore are open until quite late (malls as late as 10 PM and eateries even later! They have an awesome night life!) most stores don't open in the morning until 9.30 or 10 AM. It's worth looking up the phone numbers and giving them a call to find out when they open before you trek over.

There is a hand quilting service which takes between 2 & 6 months and is used by customers all over the world. Owner is very helpful and friendly, but sometimes her young staff are not quite so knowledgeable.

You could easily spend a couple of hours walking up and down this textile mecca in Arab Street (no pun intended). Thousands of fabrics, trims, beads etc .

A long street of Malay shops, stocking brass/copperware, leather bags and of course material. Famous for batik and silks. Cotton batiks start at S$6 per metre. Haggling permitted.

This is a suburb of Indian shops, selling everything from Spices, dresses to sari material. Great for that latest dress. You have to search. Beautiful material is mixed in with uglies. Prices start at S$6 per length (ie 5m of sari material) upwards. You have polyester, cotton and silk. For S$35, you can even buy 5m of chiffon. Blousy Indian cotton blouses cost S$10. You can haggle. Great Indian cotton tablecloths, cheap.

2)If you get a chance, definitely go to the Mustafa Centre in Little India. Seriously, you have never seen anything like it. It's a HUGE indoor market that sells EVERYTHING (and I do mean everything). In the basement is a sari fabric shop that I could have spent hours going through.

A bit off the beaten track, a taxi driver may wonder why you wish to travel through the red-light district to this shopping centre. This is the agent for Bernina machines and has a small but good range of Japanese fabrics, threads and sewing notions. They run classes, and the bag classes and patterns are apparently excellent. Very helpful and knowledgable. Shop hours are variable so worth phoning to check if they are open.

    Phakanong, Bangkok 10260
    PHONE; 02-332-6530-4,
    SHOP HOURS 10-6PM
When in Bangkok the place to visit for silks and cottons is the Jim Thompson Factory Outlet. There are 4 floors of silks and cottons, 1 floor of clothing and home furnishings plus a really good cafe on the 5th floor. There's a great selection of fabrics on the roll and most are quality Jim Thompson fabrics at discounted prices. Staff are really helpful.

Take the BTS line and stop at Bang Chak station (E10) Take exit 5. When you come to the bridge, take the right exit (Sukhumvit 95) and take the stairs leading away from the station. Walk down Sukkhumvit pass a market and turn right at Soi 93. The JT Outlet is about halfway down the street on the LHS of the road. It's an easy walk there from the BTS station.

    CHATUCHAK MARKETS

Discovered some beautiful Thai batik cotton fabrics - quitre heavy but flexible enough to use for patchwork and quilting, as well as clothing. Also, inexpensive - certainly by Austrailan standards. The one drawback is that most designs were cut into precut lengths, the longest of which was about two metres. So, if you want more than that, you have to buy more than one length. However, the variety as impressive. There was one stall that sold only cotton (no silk, very unusual) but it didn't have a name. It was near the Kampangpetch 2 Road entrance (the market is HUGE so you need to use the entrance closest or wander quite some distance) in Section 26 or 25 of the Market (I don't recall exactly as it was busy, crowded and we had browsed quite a bit when we finally discovered it).

    FABRIC HOUSE

    World Trade Centre, Shopping Complex
I have been visiting this little shop for four years and they have gradually gotten a better stock of cottons, mostly florals ( very pretty),loads of elephant fabric. Christmas fabric is out all year round. This shop is worth a visit fabric prices range from BHT75-BHT95 ($AU3.20-$AU4.00)per metre, you can only buy fabric by the metre, but at these prices it is easy.

    JAKARTA

    MARKET TANAH ABANG

The markets have current RJR, Kona Bay and Jinny Beyer in very limited amounts but what the do have costs $3.30 a metre. I bought 24 metres! All in all I spent $80.

    BALI

I have a friend who went to Bali last spring thinking she would be able to buy some of those luscious fabrics for less there. Guess what, her guide took her to where the Bali artist had whole bolts of fabric stretched out in these fields painting the fabric--fabrics with many colours took more than one day. She said it was a very wonderful sight but the rude reality is, they are contracted by Hoffman to produce this fabric and it was not available for sale. She did find some other interesting stuff to bring back though in

    DENPASSAR

I went last year and there are two large stores on Sulawesi Street in Densapar (a street teeming with fabric shops) that had thousands of batiks, some cotton, some rayon, some cotton knit, some on canvas. The cottons (which ranged in weave and quality) were from $1.50 U.S. to 1.75 per metre. The "Hoffmans" that were available for sale were rejects that had been batiked over (and were pretty awful). I had a wonderful (but very long) trip and while I certainly came home with fabric, if one counts in the cost of traveling, it was rather expensive yardage--but I'd go again in a heartbeat.

    HONG KONG

    WESTERN MARKET

323 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan.
All the fabric stalls are upstairs and they carry designer fabrics and some 100% cotton, but it is not quilting fabric.
Hong Kong is no longer a bargain centre, but a glamorous place full of designer shops (I counted 10 Louis Vuitton outlets).
For shopping, everyone now goes to Shenzhen, a 40-minute train ride from Hong Kong into China.
There is a 5-storey shopping centre just across from the train station which has everything you could imagine.
    See this website for info
There is a large floor of fabrics and you need to spend time going through all the fabrics, because it is not a specific quilting outlet and they know nothing about quilting. But the fabric is cheap! Watch out for faults in the prints, and perhaps buy more than you need.

    FIJI

     ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I didn't find any patchwork shops (no surprise that) but did find lots of bula fabrics (to make bula shirts ... like loud Hawaiian shirts) that were 100% cotton in the fabric shops along the main street, the places where the locals buy fabric to make clothing. There were some beautiful silk saris in a couple of shops at a pretty good price I thought. But too many to choose from and my friends had already shown enough patience while I was working my way through the bead and shell necklaces ... not to wear but to embellish quilts.
If you can find a local craft market, there may be some hand painted or printed fabrics, more likely to be polyester than cotton from what I was told, but I didn't find any. But the painted mats and carvings of various instruments of death and destruction were too good to pass up.
Be prepared to barter and, especially with Indian clerks, barter hard. Really hard. If they think you will walk away, they will bring down the price. That is just the way they do things there and it is part of the fun.
