The find of the year Aug 1997 A friend had located it and dragged us there. It is in the back streets of Rydalmere. You park in a suburban street and approach a smallish looking weatherboard house. My friend, in the lead, trooped us up the driveway, around the back and through a yard filled with a caravan, some cats, a few chooks and a whole lot of birds in cages. She took us up to a broken down looking shed and inside I discovered Sylvia Smith (owner) and about 5,000 bolts of material. She has it all. All the Jinny Beyer's, Hoffmans, 30s and just about anything else you could name. It all starts at about $7.00 a metre. The only thing in the place over $14.00 /m was some stuff that was 108" wide. There are fat quarters from $1.00 - and no it isn't junk. She will cut anything you like into fat quarters. It was amazing. The service was great, Sylvia and a young male assistant could not have been more helpful. They said they would open by appointment on Thursday night and Sunday if they had to. They also do heaps of mail order. They send out swatches of just about anything. I asked about swatches and was handed a bag of them on my way out. For the faint hearted, you will have to deal with a few things. There was a cat lying on the counter where they cut the material and serve the customers. Sylvia seems to be a smoker and the light in one corner wasn't great. These were the only problems I could find, but it would never stop me from going back again (and again and again).

LEURA

PICKLEMOUSE CORNER

Shop 4/152 Megalong St

PHONE: 4784 2854

Picklemouse Corner is in the cottage in the middle of the main Leura carpark, near the nursery. It's a smaller shop crammed with fabrics. One of the shop's specialities is kits for simple, effective quilt designs such as a flannel churn dash. Most fabrics are country or thirties in style - Aunt Grace and Thimbleberries and Debbie Mumm are among the design styles stocked here. They'll cut fat quarters if asked - with space at a premium they don't have lots precut. Down the corridor the shop stocks a room of gift products - bears and mugs and so forth. Another room is full of haberdashery. The staff are helpful and cheerful. The home-made fudge is wonderful - I can recommend the passionfruit and chocolate varieties! There are also some cross-stitch and doll kits/patterns available here too, and jars of home-made jam.

Leura itself has many interesting shops for browsing - gifts, antiques, crafts, woodwork, homewares and so on. Megalong Books is a great bookshop. You have a choice of cafes for lunch or tea, while the artisan bread shop near Megalong Books has extraordinary breads. Parking can be a challenge on weekends as Leura attracts many visitors.

POST OFFICE PATCHWORK

SHOP HOURS: seven days: weekdays 10am-5pm, weekends 10am - 4pm

Rhonda Pearce, the proprietor, has a wonderful eye for fabric, and a great way with people, so this shop is always a pleasure to visit. She buys selectively across a number of ranges, (and for some, buys a bolt of everything) so there's something to suit everyone's tastes in fabric, and the shop is spacious, so you can see the fabrics well. She cuts the fabric (doesn't rip it) and as well as an extensive range of fat quarters, she'll cut fat eighths too. There are always charm packs, and $2.50 FQs and a table of $10 specials. The shop also stocks an interesting range of buttons and other useful quilty items, gift lines (eg. bears and dolls). New fabrics are arriving all the time - I find it hard to leave without something irresistible! There are classes and workshops, and always quilts on the wall for inspiration, most made by Rhonda, who is both knowledgeable and wise about quiltmaking techniques and working with fabric.

This shop is housed in the old PO building in Glenbrook.

Parking is easy, there are cafes nearby, and the park at the top of the street has a playground and toilet facilities.

The woman who owns the shop is very nice and friendly and gives really helpful advice. The range of prices are as usual but you can get fats in every fabric for around $3. They are a large warehouse style shop opposite Pennant Hills station, They claim to have over 3,000 fabrics in stock, including the entire Jinny Beyer range. I was certainly impressed with what they had. Their prices seemed to be about average at around $16 or $17 per metre for Jinny Beyer, but with many at $9.95 and some even cheaper. They also have a big range of other craft supplies, sewing machines and cabinets, and they run classes too. I will be a regular customer there any time I am up that way. They had a fantastic range of all sorts of craft items, including a stack of fabric and heaps cheaper than you would normally find it.

I love visiting this shop - it is pure eye candy for the country quilter. A very good range of country style fabrics, and good displays of quilts which come as kits and/or patterns. This shop also has many, many paper patterns from Indygo Junction, City Stitcher, Country Friends and Woodcutters Daughter. Heaps of quilt hangers as well.

Berrima Patchwork offers classes, often for whole weekends. If you call, I'm sure they will send you their newsletter with the class listings. If you get the chance while you are in the shop, take a peek in their classroom - there are fantastic quilts hanging on the wall.

All in all it is a delightful shop with lots of potential as new stocks arrive. I'm sure it will become very popular.

GOULBURN

If you go to the Visitors Centre (tourist info) in Sloane Street they will give you a map of Goulburn and will probably be able to mark the shops you want on the map for you. Just a little shop, but with a nice range of cloth dolls, stitcheries and country quilt ideas, not a bazillion fabrics.

Books patterns

Coming into Goulburn from the Sydney side there is a sign saying "Curtains. Patchwork." but that shop has closed and the shop space is for lease - Goulburn Country Patchwork is further on. This charming little shop has a good range of stitchery and cloth doll patterns and some patchwork fabrics in country style and classics such as tickings. There are lots of samples to see in quilts, cloth dolls and stitcheries, so it may take you longer to look around than the size of the shop may suggest. The samples are very attractively arranged. Packaged patterns are from a variety of Australian and US designers such as Wendy Brigg, Up in Annie's Room, Dizzy Frizzy; and there are also some patterns designed by the shop.

NOWRA

JUKEJEMA QUILTING BARN

64 Kinghorne Street, near Dymocks.

PHONE;          02 44212577

They only have a fairly small range of fabrics as yet (well, naturally!) but are getting more soon. It is a lovely little shop (although not a barn) with very friendly staff. They are running classes.

2)What I liked about this shop was its warm and inviting country décor. While there's not a massive range of quilting fabrics, there are some well-chosen ranges with the latest fabrics made into quilts and decorator items so you can see what they look like. Lots of gift items including bears, quilt kits, fun carry bags, and the latest quilt and stitchery books. But one of the best things this gal does is carry a lot of patterns and kits by Australian designers, all packaged in an enticing way that makes you want to buy them all!

Well worth a visit if you're on holiday down there. BTW, in the same street, there's a regular fabric shop with some patchwork fabrics and on the other side of the road, there's a wool shop so plenty to choose from.

I found some wonderful books at reduced prices because of damaged covers, so it is well worth the visit for specials. One thing I noticed was that they have one range of jewel tone fabrics in both flannels and quilters cotton. The work room is large and spacious, just behind the main part of the shop. Lovely quilts hanging everywhere and they also specialise in a range of hand made ceramic buttons, very nice. They are holding regular classes and workshops. 1) Directions for those who haven't been to Gloria McKinnon's shop in Newcastle (she owns Anne's G.B.): Hamilton is actually a suburb of Newcastle, and to get to Beaumont Street from the freeway which runs from Sydney north to ? (I don't know how far it goes before becoming an ordinary road again) you just turn off the freeway towards Newcastle. You actually cross Beaumont Street. Anne's G.B. is a block or so to the right of the intersection, its on a corner and has a large whitish marble exterior with arches at the front. Not hard to find. Treasure trove inside - especially if you are into making cloth dolls or fine embroidery as well as quilting. Displays of dolls (at least, when I am there for the cloth doll symposium) is "something else". Great shop for fabric and all sorts of other lushy sewaholic stuff! Definitely recommended

2) oh, and I nearly forgot my all time favourite that I drive two hours to Newcastle to visit- Anne's Glory Box!!!!!!!!!!

3)They have opened an antique centre in the front half of the building, its one of those multi stall style antique store. I had a squiz about a month ago, had a lot of bits and pieces, but there were no less than 3 treadles and antique sewing machines, as well as buttons and other sewing implements, although some were more vintage than antique.

it is the one at the end facing the street.  They have two units - one for misc craft items which I have not been into yet.  The good news is they have a very large unit dedicated to patchwork fabric and what nots, along with a room for lessons

I visited this shop a few weeks ago and while it is seems to be really disorganised the owner knows exactly what she has and where it is.

Fantazia in Tweed Heads has opened a Patchwork fabric store practically next door it has an excellent selection all at $11 a metre. (So far it is a more organized than it's sister shop).

B) Fantasia is absolutely a must-see

C) They are bigger and better than ever as they are now in two shops. One contains Patchwork Fabric to die for and the other contains everything one could want for sewing anything one can think of.

OWNER: Carolyn Konig

MAILING ADDRESS: PO Box 753 Wodonga 3689

n Carolyn’s home where she has a shop and also takes classes.   It proved a little difficult to find even with the GPS, but was certainly worth while and even though she had a class at the time we were there, she could not have been more helpful.

Absolutely wonderful service and although the shop is very small at this stage, another room is being built out the back. She specializes in hand work .   The shop specializes in Reproduction Fabrics although she does have other fabric as well.

Can certainly recommend this shop.

Adelong is in southern NSW, 20km off the Hume Highway between Gundagai and Albury, a picturesque little town. The shop is lovely with a good range of fabrics and patterns, and the ladies running it were very helpful. Their 'sit and sew' group met the night I was there, and they invited me along.

BERRIMA PATCHWORK AND CRAFT

Berrima Patchwork is located opposite the pub on the Old Hume Highway. Tell your husband it is halfway between Canberra and Sydney! (it's not quite, but...)
Berrima Patchork offers classes, often for whole weekends. If you call, I'm sure they will send you their newletter with the class listings. If you get the chance while you are in the shop, take a peek in their classroom - there are fantastic quilts hanging on the wall.

This is my local shop which started off some years ago in a very small way and is one of the best places I have every visited and I have visited many. The service is always friendly and interested and over the years the stock has gone from being mainly dicount fabrics to a vast range of the very best patchwork range available at very reasonable prices. The owner, Barbara English is just a delight! Nothing is too much trouble and her staff are always interested and friendly. She will also hang one's finished quilts for display.
